The spear of Destiny

In an old legend narrates that the lance that pierced Jesus, when he was on the cross, gives it to whom has fantastic powers. Over time, what appeared to be a simple story, proved a real thing

A biblical legend

The origins of the legend about the spear of Destiny is in the Bible. In John, there are a few paragraphs that describe the circumstances of the death of the Savior. Because on Saturday evening to Hebrew began a strict celebration of the Sabbath, their priests asked Pilate to break the Crucified legs to die soon and they remain the bodies on the cross in a day so important for Jews.
The gospel states that the Romans planned to break Jesus' legs, a practice known as crurifragium, which was a method of hastening death during a crucifixion.

Once spoken command, the soldiers mutilated limbs of the two thieves crucified with Jesus. Because the Savior was already dead, her ordeal has not been applied to him. "The soldiers came, therefore, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other which were crucified with him. When they came to Jesus and saw that she was dead, did not break his legs, but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. " (John 19: 31-37)

The phenomenon of blood and water was considered a miracle by Origen (although the water may be explained biologically by the piercing of the pericardial sinus secondary to cardiac tamponade.) Catholics generally choose to employ a more allegorical interpretation: it represents the Church (and more specifically, the sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist) issuing from the side of Christ, just as Eve was taken from the side of Adam.

A magic talisman

Taking amplifying legends and biblical Christian people's imagination has created numerous stories about the lance that pierced Jesus. Written, most during the Crusades, they claim that the Roman soldier who prevented mutilation feet of Jesus, had a pity, deeply impressed by the courage and dignity crucified. Proving that died was pierced with the spear, he actually had wanted to shield Jesus humility crushing body. Moreover, the centurion Gaius Cassius was later converted to Christianity and became famous by the name of Longinus (the man with the spear). His weapon, named "Spear of Destiny", will see over time an adventurous life, passing from hand to hand, from one historical era to another. Over time, the legend has made it a kind of magic talisman; who possess, knowing his strength, able to master the destiny of the world.
But Spear of Destiny was not the only object invested with enormous powers by touching the body of Jesus. Early Christian writings state that all relics of the crucifixion were endowed with miraculous forces. Shirt Christ healed the sick and raised the dead-i; the wood of the cross that had been martyred had the power to stop all evil and to defeat the enemy, while the crown of thorns causes a deep humility, canceling the fierce pride of men. That among these relics, the most coveted (especially the military chiefs of the world) was Spear of Destiny is not surprising: her strength historic supremacy.

Total supremacy

Road lance of centuries of historical remains an extremely exciting. The earliest information we have from the year 285 (our era), when Maurice - Theban legion commander's Christian - wanted to die with the spear in hand, with those of its 6666 soldiers, in order Roman tyrant Maximilian. Later she accompanied him permanently Emperor Constantine the Great, during the fighting that has led them to secure sovereignty over the Eastern Roman Empire, which they converted to Christianity. The same lance seems to be practical and Theodosius, who served it to him defeat the Goths.
Lance left Rome in the year 410 after the city was sacked by Alaric I, unlike the Germans hand.

One of the earliest mentions of a relic preserved as the Holy Lance is in the account of the pilgrim Antoninus of Piacenza, about 570, who described the holy places of Jerusalem, where he saw in the basilica of Mount Zion "the crown of thorns with which Our Lord was crowned and the lance with which he was struck on the side".
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the presence in Jerusalem of this relic is attested half a century earlier by Cassiodorus and was known to Gregory of Tours.

In 615 Jerusalem was captured by the Persian King Khosrau II; according to the Chronicon Paschale, the iron point of the lance, which had been broken off, was given in the same year to Nicetas, who took it to Constantinople and deposited it in the church of Hagia Sophia.

Since then, she appears regularly throughout history, the barbaric warriors in Northern Europe. French

But he lost it by mistake, returning from his last battle, dying in the days that followed. Since then, she appears regularly throughout history, the barbaric warriors in Northern Europe. Whatever the Constantinople relic was, it fell into the hands of the Turks, and in 1492, under circumstances minutely described in Pastor's History of the Popes, the Sultan Bayazid II sent it to Innocent VIII to encourage the pope to continue to keep his brother and rival Zizim (Cem), prisoner. At this time, great doubts as to its authenticity were felt at Rome, as Johann Burchard records, because of the presence of other rival lances in Paris (the point that had been separated from the lance), Nuremberg (see "Vienna lance" below), and Armenia.
In the mid-1700s, Benedict XIV states that he obtained from Paris an exact drawing of the point of the lance and that in comparing it with the larger relic in St. Peter's he was satisfied that the two had originally formed one blade. This relic has never since left Rome, where it is preserved under the dome of Saint Peter's Basilica, although the Roman Catholic Church makes no claim as to its authenticity.

Subsequently, the lance reappears in various testimonies, becoming an emblem of power for a long succession of kings saints (mostly German), reaching the final at Francis I, Emperor of Austria. Lance remained in Vienna until the close of the Second World War, when her fascination was extended to a diabolical character: Adolf Hitler.

Hitler and Spear of Destiny

The leader of the Third Reich was reportedly obsessed with finding the relic, and may have actually succeeded. According to Meltzer and his crew, German members of the occult wanted Hitler to secure the spear because it would not only make him undefeated in battle but also solidify support from his base as the true world leader.

Hitler's path was crossed for the first time that the lance in 1912, when the future Fuhrer was just a damn poor student, studying Fine Arts in the Austrian capital. There was spent for swift seduction sacred relic. Museum "Hofburg" where the spear was exposed, the young Hitler spent hours contemplating it.

In the Wagner opera Parsifal, Klingsor was a despicable adversary of the Knights of the Holy Grail. The friend sought to capture the Spear of Destiny from them and use it in his practice of black magic. In history, no figure was more feared than the black magician Landulph II of Capua. He, too, was obsessed with the power of the Spear of Destiny.
Hitler identified the similarities between Wagner's character and the magician. He saw their struggles as parallel to his own quest for the holy icon. To Hitler, the blood purity of the Grail Knights and the maniacal quest of Klingsor and Landulph for the spear was the blueprint for world conquest by Nazi power. Hitler believed he would one day fulfill a historic destiny. How he would do this was not clear until he was 21.

Walter Johannes Stein reportedly, a mathematician and occultist Austrian whom he met Hitler just before the First World War, the future Führer was already an expert of the holy lance and legends related to its ability to confer supreme power. Incidentally, one of Hitler's first acts in his new capacity as Führer of the Reich was to steal the treasures of the Habsburg crown, to bring them to Germany. Among them was, of course, and Spear of Destiny.
A same Stein reports that Hitler never hides the effect of the lance over it: "Slowly, I realized that lance exudes a presence fantasy same presence terrifying that I felt in the depths of myself in the rare moments of life when I had the premonition of the great destiny that awaited me, "said the future leader. Arriving in Germany, spear was guarded very well - like other parts of the Habsburg treasure - St. Catherine's church in Nuremberg. If Hitler was so convinced of the power of the lance, as Stein said, no doubt because he believed with the same conviction that its loss would have triggered the collapse of his dictatorial rule. Possession of Destiny Lances I reinforced the belief he will fulfill his mission, becoming the sole ruler of the world.

From legend to reality

At this point, the relationship between Hitler and lance becomes a bizarre example of symbiosis that occurs when legends are mixed in the concrete life of mortals. Assuming the spear did not have any power, who took possession of them were so convinced that it is real, that gave a mystical significance, which had a concrete impact on history.
Returning to legend, it is said that when Hitler was separated from lance coincided with the collapse of the Third Reich. In October 1944, Nuremberg was hit by Allied bombing. Hitler decided that both lance and Habsburg treasure be buried in a specially built vault. Six months later, the city was under siege. US troops fought hard with SS formations and artillery detachments that Hitler had ordered the Nuremberg defense. After several days, the city was conquered. It was April 20, 1945, the day of the 56th anniversary of Hitler.

A certain Lieutenant William Horn, belonging to the US Seventh Army has been tasked to find the treasure of the Habsburgs. Entry into the secret vault, removed daylight by a bomb, was discovered by chance on April 30, 1945, and Lieutenant Horn took possession lance US government account. The same day, Hitler - who was hiding in his bunker in Berlin - committed suicide. There was never found out whether or not he had known that the spear had fallen into the hands of his enemies. But many people saw the coincidence of the two events confirm the legend. After the war, the United States returned lance museum Hofburg in Vienna, where it can be seen today.

Another says that the lance on display in Vienna is a fake planted by Hitler, who had the real one shipped to Antarctica and hidden along with other Nazi treasures. According to one researcher, it may not be in the hands of a "Nazi secret society."
